Meet Luna AI, a groundbreaking product developed by Shahir Abdul during the 2024 Supaheroes Hackathon. Luna AI is more than just a tool—it's a revolution in how educational content is created, customised, and delivered.

The Genesis of Luna AI 🌱

The best products often emerge from personal pain points, and Luna AI is no exception. Shahir, with his background in conducting language training programs for corporate organisations and educational institutions, faced a recurring challenge: customising course materials for diverse groups. The process was time-consuming, expensive, and often impossible to tailor to specific needs. Naturally, the first problem Shahir wanted to solve with AI was course creation.

Shahir’s journey in AI started earlier with the development of a WhatsApp bot that created personalised lessons for users, mainly for practicing English. Through this, he honed his skills in building AI agents with OpenAI's JSON mode, function calling, and tool use. So when the Supaheroes Hackathon came around, Shahir was ready to take on a new challenge.

Building Luna AI: The Process 🛠

For Shahir, the backend was the easy part. Having spent considerable time with tools like OpenAI and libraries like Instructor, Shahir’s main focus during the hackathon was integrating Groq for tool calling and scripting more detailed queries for Supabase. The real challenge, however, lay in the frontend development.

While Shahir was familiar with Typescript and React, aligning the frontend with his vision proved challenging. But with a little help from Claude, he was able to piece together a frontend that nearly matched his expectations.

By the end of the hackathon, Shahir had developed a single-user product that had the potential to revolutionise the way educational content is created.

The Evolution and Impact of Luna AI 🚀

Since its inception, Luna AI has grown rapidly. In just a few weeks, the platform has created over 200 lessons, significantly reducing the time and effort required by educators.

But the real game-changer is Luna AI’s latest feature—course creation. Luna can now take a variety of input formats, including PDFs, images, Word files, Excel files, audio files, PPTs, and even URLs, to build comprehensive courses. These courses can span multiple chapters, include quizzes, and integrate videos, making it easy for creators to share them with their audience. What’s more, each learner gains access to a personal AI buddy to help them understand the course material better.

Luna AI’s course creation feature expands the platform's reach by allowing anyone to create courses based on their domain expertise and monetize them without the hassle of organizing their vast knowledge base. Luna AI was initially designed to save educators hours and weeks, but with this new capability, it can now save them months.
